Ginkgo Biloba / Standardized Extract | Information Resources | |
|
Ginkgo Biloba is widely used in the US and Europe (a best selling prescription drug) to support mental impairments and vascular diseases. A 1997 U.S. study by JAMA reported on the effectiveness of using 120 MG of ginkgo extract on patients with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Results concluded that Ginkgo Biloba stabilizes and in many cases improves cognitive and social functioning in demented patients and delays disease progression for six months without significant side effects. The methods and study results have been disputed in the USA but, a German study using 240 MG dosing also concluded patients dementia improved significantly after 3 months with no significant side effects. Other studies report Ginkgo Biloba provides patients other health benefits including enhanced mental alertness for healthy people, reduced pain for people with peripheral vascular disease, ear ringing reductions and altitude sickness support. In clinical studies Ginkgo Biloba extract has produced rare side effects. |
